Character Name: Katie Holt, AKA "Pidge Gunderson"
Series: Voltron: Legendary Defenders
Canon Point: S1Ep13
Summary/History: Pidge's Wiki entry
Personality:
Early on in the series it becomes very clear that Pidge is the "brains" of the original Garrison trio. While Hunk certainly isn't dumb by any stretch of the imagination, it's Pidge who starts off with a self-built long-range radio out of whatever parts she managed to find and pilfer in the Garrison - an establishing trait that continues on throughout the series with the modifications and various hacking scenes that Pidge has. Her intelligence is what carries a good portion of her personality, but she's hardly a one-note character in that regard. It's a skill and used as such, working around many of the other traits that Pidge has.
Pidge initially started off very closed off and intensely private about herself, though with good reason given that she was posing as a male Garrison student in order to find out the truth about her missing family members. She kept to herself, refusing to join Hunk and Lance for "team bonding" and even though she did eventually become friends with the Voltron team later on she still had trouble opening up until she finally let the truth about her identity out completely. Even with that, though, Shiro is really the only one she's ever seen completely confiding in.
Still, she, like Hunk, has begun to start considering the rest of the team her surrogate family, and as family is incredibly important to her (her entire involvement with the story revolved around being convinced that her brother and father were still alive somewhere) she is extremely protective of them and unwilling to leave them in a time of need, even when her goals lie elsewhere.
In that sense she keeps most of her emotions relatively locked down. She is never seen letting tears fall in the presence of anyone but Shiro, though like Keith her temper does get the better of her often. Much in the way she's intensely private, she also doesn't like her things being touched or messed with and will actively smack hands away and yell when that proximity is being violated. She dislikes being underestimated and will loudly state as much. Call her "child" and she will insist that she is not a child, but a Paladin of Voltron.
Pidge is hardly all doom and gloom even with what happened to her family and all the things that have come about since, though. She jokes and laughs just as much as the rest of the team, loves throwing out snark and sarcasm, and considers difficult situations to be a challenge of her intelligence that is a hurdle she is absolutely going to overcome. When she gets flustered she rambles. A lot. And not everything she says makes a whole lot of sense ("I also sweat a lot. Unrelated to the peanuts.") but it's clear in these moments her brain often goes faster than her mouth can keep up with.
When Pidge is completely in her element, though, she proves time and time again to be not only a capable Paladin of the Green Lion, but an important part of Team Voltron as well as a loyal friend through and through.
Powers/Abilities:
🐆Intelligence/Technical Skills🐆
Pidge was shown early on to have high intellect, starting out as the Communications Officer while in training with Hunk and Lance and eventually moving to the unofficial role of team Engineer for Team Voltron as communications and back up support was handled mostly by the Castle of Lions, Allura and Coran at that point. She has showed great aptitude in creating a long-range system that was capable of detecting Galra signals even before she was ever named as the pilot of the Green Lion, and once under the Paladin title went about reverse-engineering and retrofitting shuttles and her own lion with multiple additional systems including cloaking and booster rockets.
She has a high level of hacking skills and seems to have absolutely no problem getting in to things that are primarily the technology of other species, such as reprogramming "Rover", a Galran drone, and getting a robotic sentry to answer questions after quite a bit of work. The only barrier she's ever run in to has been language when there is no possible way to translate - examples being the computers in her lion or on the ship that obviously provide some sort of translation versus switches that merely had their information written on them.
Pidge was also the first one to begin figuring out the alternate uses of the Bayards - the specially made hand held weapons for the Paladins that were said to take on the form best suited for the user. While the other Paladins, Shiro excluded, had only manifested one weapon form each (a rail gun for Lance, a sword for Keith and a heavy machine gun for Hunk) Pidge had figured out that her own Bayard could not only be used as a katar-like short dagger but a stun-gun and a hook shot. Making use of the technology just in the Paladin suits as well, she has created fake outs against enemies with hologram versions of herself, and even used elements of the castle against an invading Galra force.
Her time spent in the castle when not training with the other Paladins or running missions seems to be spent tinkering with this, that, and whatever else she can get her hands on, and was even seen shortly after arriving at the castle using what looked to be some sort of Altaesian laptop. When she isn't making her own modifications, she is just as often working with Hunk to modify and improve weaponry.
🐆Combat🐆
While it is never shown before the Paladins are recruited as such, Pidge appeared to have at least a basic idea of how to use hand to hand combat and weaponry. The level of said skill is mid-range at best, able to face down Sendak of the Galran Empire along side Keith with some additional help from Allura and Lance, getting Sendak's energy-powered prosthetic arm off during the battle. She is small, thin and spry meaning that she easily has maneuverability and speed on her side, though the way she dealt with the sentries before hand showed more deception and dodging in order to survive than actual fighting.
Alone, she is more likely to find a way to trick her enemies or hide from them than engage one on one unless it's the only option (as with Haxus), but together with the other Paladins she show strength in being able to work in tandem with them to make it a much fairer fight. These are all skills that could easily be honed, though, as Pidge is clearly a fast learner.
🐆Piloting🐆
Though otherwise useless in the current game setting, Pidge has some training in piloting as is shown in her ability to take over the Green Lion without much difficulty. Granted the Lions do, to a certain extent, "speak" to their pilots and aid with such things but it is evident that Pidge has had to take some of the reigns herself as she is not nearly "in tune" with her Lion as Shiro is.
